About Us
Started in 1975 as a community service project of Garden Way, the former manufacturer of Troy-Bilt Lawn and Garden Equipment.

Today Capital Roots works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York’s Capital Region by organizing community gardens, providing healthy food access, offering nutritional and horticultural education for all ages and coordinating urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga Counties.
Capital Roots' Food Hub purchases bulk quantities of food from local, regional, national and international sources multiple times per week and distributes it to our customers through our many Food Access programs. Our goal is to provide a large variety of healthy, affordable and local produce to residents with limited access to fresh food.

By purchasing bulk quantities of food we are able to keep the cost of our products affordable for all of our customers - from individuals to institutions - in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Southern Saratoga counties. The Capital Roots' Food Hub focuses on offering a wide variety of locally grown produce, from our 11 county food shed, as well as a full selection of produce from around the world.

Our goal is to support local producers by offering them access to new, often overlooked markets and supporting the local economy and food system of the Capital Region.
